Divine Intervention or Coincidence? The Faith Divide

There’s always something unexpected in life. As they say, all plans don’t survive first contact. Yet, many of these events make us pause and wonder. For a lot of Christian stories of faith, these moments are clear signs of a higher power at work: that there is a touch of the divine in the everyday. But, for some, these same experiences are simply regarded as a matter of luck, timing, or the random nature of the universe.

This fundamental divide brings us squarely to the question: is there divine intervention, or is it just coincidence?

The Touch of the Divine in the Everyday

For many, especially Christians, these seemingly random occurrences are anything but. They are interpreted as direct, purposeful instances of supernatural intervention by a benevolent God. Dr. Julius Mosley II, in his powerful book, Living Life with Blinders On: Living Life As God Intended, explains this idea well. When he talks about blinders, he doesn’t mean ignoring reality. Instead, he means choosing to focus on God’s plan and remembering that He’s always at work. With these blinders on, what others might call luck, those with faith see as God’s careful design and divine timing.

Dr. Mosley’s own intense experiences, including near-death moments, led him to write this book. He wants readers to wake up to the idea of eternal life – that our choices now shape what happens after we die. This belief makes you look for God’s patterns everywhere.

For Mosley, God’s actions aren’t random; they fit into His bigger plan for us, showing His power and helping us grow.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

Divine Intervention or Coincidence?

But there’s another way to look at these events. Many people, using a more everyday, logical view, believe that what seems like God’s help can often be explained by simple probabilities or how our minds work. What one person calls a miracle, a skeptic might attribute to confirmation bias.

Think about it: in a world with billions of things happening every second, things that seem incredibly unlikely are bound to occur by pure chance. The odds of two people thinking about each other at the exact same moment might be tiny, but with so many people in the world, it’s bound to happen sometimes.

Yet, regardless of what you may think, believing that a higher being is there guiding these things is very comforting. It gives us a sense of safety in a world that can feel chaotic.

The lot is cast into the lap,

but its every decision is from the Lord.

Proverbs 16:33

Striking a Healthy Balance of Faith and Skepticism

Can these two ways of seeing things ever meet in the middle? Probably not completely, because they start from very different ideas about how the world works. For some, the line between God’s action and simple chance is blurry, or maybe it doesn’t even matter. How you see it often comes down to your personal beliefs, how you grew up, and what you’ve experienced.

But for those with faith, especially those who connect with Mosley’s ideas, faith provides an overarching framework through which to interpret all events. It’s not necessarily saying that there is no such thing as coincidence but rather about the perception that beyond this surface level, there is a deeper layer of meaning and purpose within what might otherwise appear random.

This often involves understanding to be spiritually discerning and having the ability to recognize God’s work in the seemingly ordinary. It’s about how these events fit into your spiritual journey, embracing the faith and mystery inherent in believing in a divine plan.

For we live by faith, not by sight.
